The Summit Ladies is part of The Summit Bowling Club, which was founded in the year 1952/53

Built by the members and led by Alf Barlow , the first foundation member, the original clubhouse can still be seen in the far corner, and one can see how our club has progressed from the early 50's .

The Beginning of The Summit Ladies Bowls Club

As told by Val Waterson to Madge White

The Summit Bowls Club was formed when Fred Rogers, Alf Barlow, Cliff Howard and Cliff Halloran put in the ground work and got things moving in 1952.

In April 1953 Mable Hooper called a gathering of The Summit ladies and the Ladies Club was formed.

Present Mesdames, A. Taggart, A. Turner, M.Rossow, C. Moore, C. Howard, D. Scott, K. Fry, M. Butler, E. Taylor, F. Best, J. Rushton, E. Howard, M. Hooper, V. Waterson, E. Wright and Mrs Spillar, representative from Stanthorpe attended.

The Club was to be The Summit Ladies Bowling Club. Officers for the first year were; President. E. Taylor, Secretary. M. Hooper, Vice Presidents, F. Best and M. Rossow.  Patroness, E.  Howard. Committee: A. Turner, C. Howard, D. Scott, K. Fry, V. Waterson and E. Wright. Our Subs for a year, £1/1/-. When we started playing, green fees were 6d. When we held our General Meeting we had some new faces:- R. Hopgood, A. Rogers, Chub Newlands, M. Smith, E. Nielson, D. Deutscher, M. Binnington. Applications were received from 10 other ladies, who did play soon after. At the end of the first year we had 42 members. Income for the year £258/18/11. It was raised with street stalls, a concert organized by D. Fry, card evenings, square dancing and a concert with The Stanthorpe Brass Band.

We were able to purchase, tables, chairs, forms, and crockery. We gave the men £30. The Ladies had an afternoon and each gave a cake, plate and another afternoon when we all gave a tea towel.

The green was first played on by the men on the afternoon of June 20th, 1953. The Ladies joined them for afternoon tea in the shed.

The men had their official opening 25th September, 1954. Q.L.B.A. President Mrs Drummond opened the Ladies on 7th October, 1954

At one stage we had almost 100 members; of course not all were players.

We were playing for a number of years before we were able to win the Singles & Fours, but got both out at Goondiwindi in April 1965.  M. Baker, Singles, and J. Bonner, D. Halloran, U. Elwood and V. Waterson the Fours. But we have achieved success a number of times since

The present club house was built in 1973 by the members whose names can be found on the wall above the entry way.

Many improvements have taken place, mainly done by voluntary labour.

The Summit Ladies is in The Southern Downs District Ladies Bowling Association.

The Club is located on Sawmill Road The Summit, just of the New England Highway.

Parking is a breeze at The Club and you will find 2 grass green ready to play.

The greens at The Summit are well known for their pace and are quite possibly the best in the district.
